What are Move Over Laws?

When you hear sirens, a basic instinct usually tells you to pull over when you're on a road. There are move over laws in place that can result in being ticketed if you do not move over when there are vehicles with lights and sirens on the road behind you or coming toward you.

In many states, these laws surround emergency vehicles as well as tow truck drivers. You should try to shift out of your lane if it's safe to do so or slow your speed so that the vehicle can get by on the road. Keep in mind that you need to pay attention to the surrounding traffic and the weather conditions when you're trying to merge off the side of the road. There are some laws that indicate that you are to move over for utility vehicles that have their flashing lights on, especially if they are trying to get to an area that has seen storm damage or if there has been an accident involving utility equipment. Road maintenance and municipal vehicles are usually included in move over laws as well.
